New Workshop

Film-style location lighting

July 20-22, 2007 to coincide with the DV Expo. Visit the expo one day, then take a workshop on another.

Location Lighting Workshop

Actually we should call this course; "Everything You'll Ever Need To Get Going In Location Lighting Knowledge". This one-day workshop takes you on location in the belly of the beast; to a one bedroom apartment in NYC. In small groups attendees will learn to light various set-ups for the dramatic such as a dining room scene, a bedroom scene, bathroom scene, kitchen scene and a living room scene using a high definition camera. It's like working on the set of an independent film. What better way to see and learn? It's not like any course you ever attended. This is a hands-on workshop. Best of all Walter uses bare minimums in equipment when teaching so you can learn how to light more like the way you might find yourself -with limited finances and resources. This seminar truly teaches you the term "getting more for less". This is a rare opportunity to gain a few years of lighting experience in a day with a master of lighting. Walter's lighting courses are revered. He teaches in a method that anyone can benefit from using clear conversational methods.

The cost of the day of lighting is $100.00 per person. It's an eight hour day that you will get you ready to tackle the feature you always wanted to shoot, or help you make up for the last disaster you attempted. You'll gain the confidence that only real-world experience will give you. And you'll get an added bonus of a free instructional DVD worth $50.00.

The morning begins with the group sitting down to view and discuss the lighting technique and motivation of a well-known motion picture. This portion of the seminar is often rated as one of the highlights with comments usually ranging from "I'll never be able to watch a film the same way again" to "WOW! I loved this part, can you come over my house and watch other films with me too?". If you never saw Walter discuss how a major motion picture is lit, then you haven't learned the universal basics of lighting correctly.

After lunch, the second part of the day consists of Walter walking you through up to five real-world lighting scenarios. We start in the bathroom demonstrating a few set-ups. You get to both watch and participate as the participants become a working crew. Then we move into the bedroom. From there the dining room. This is the equivalent of walking onto the set of a feature film and having the DoP show you what he does and why he is doing. Walter explains motivation, camera angles, composition, and lighting technique. You'll find nothing like it in a video or a book, or all the books and videos you can read for that matter.

You'll leave with a completely new understanding about how to light for film, how the pros do it on a daily basis, how you don't need a lot to make great pictures and better understand how to adjust a high definition camera to create particular looks. We'd call this an HD lighting seminar, but what you will learn is that lighting is lighting, base don what you are trying to achieve, not a format. You'll also get an insight as to why all this incessant web discussion about different technical specs such as 4:2:2, CCD size, formats wars, etc, is useless.

What past attendees had to say:

"I thought since I really had nothing better to do, I would give Walter's location workshop a shot with some of my pals. As it turned out, I really didn't have anything to do that could have possibly been better. From analysis of lighting motivation, to the little nitty-gritty things that need to be done on a location set - we covered it all. I came away amazed at how location set-ups could be done with stunning professional results, with less equipment than would fit in a couple of medium-sized suitcases. If you want to make films, and you need to shoot on location, you really need to do this workshop yourself. "
