Walter Graff April 2008 Green Screen Seminar
Absolutely every angle on how to light, shoot and edit green/blue screen

NYC

This is the seminar that has gotten rave reviews from attendees at a recent event. It's the seminar that saw 14 people miss due to the event selling out. It's the seminar that a recent email I sent asking if anyone else was interested in also attending, got over 100 positive responses.

Very simply, few have as much experience as I do with video chroma key. I have worked on over 1000 such shoots from tabletop to 100 foot screens. I am currently asked to consult and trouble-shoot jobs all over the world that involve green/blue screen. I was consulted and quoted in the February Scientific American in an article on how the process of film blue screen is accomplished. Very simply, it's tough to find a person who knows all the intricacies of shooting chroma key as I do. And with that, all the myths about shooting. And there are far too many myths. So that is what this seminar does.

To accommodate all the recent requests, I will give a single day seminar to small groups of six people, and have picked weekend days in April to accomplish this.

What you will learn:

1: How to light a green/blue screen. I will light both colors, blue and green. I will show you various techniques, both low budget, and higher budget for lighting. I will show how to light with the camera lone, with a light meter and with a scope. I will show what is important technically to making a good key. I will also include your thoughts and questions in what I do so we can do it and test it to see if it works. In other words we will try all sorts of things in the area of shooting so you can see everything you ever wanted to know. We will log and record each test of the technique to see what happens later in the seminar when we take it to post and what we can do to fix it. This part of the day is what everyone always wanted to see but no one showed them, and in no way to this degree of detail.

2: The myths of lighting chroma keys. This could be a seminar by itself. We will shoot both standard def and High def formats including 4:1:1, 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 formats to show that those myths about color sampling are just that. We'll explore spill and how it isn't what they tell you. Basically, I'll reveal all the myths that exist and show you with your own eyes that green screen is not the rocket science that some would like to make it. That’s not to say anyone could do it easily, that comes from experience, but having an experienced person doing it is certainly eye-opening.

3: Editing. Yes, the techniques you use in editing are more important to good chroma key than lighting. I'll prove that. We will take all the footage we shot and bring it into Final Cut and show what works, what does not, and how to make the most out of what you have.

What can you expect? If I could plug a cable in-between my head and yours, I’d be able to transfer years of knowledge and probably a few accidental viruses. I can’t. But what I can do is get your mind working. I like my seminars to be less “This is how it IS done” and more “This is how I do it and I want you to take this information and figure out what works for you”.

This will be a full day of at least 8 hours and can go even longer depending on the group's interest. I am more interested in answering all questions and making sure you walk out of this knowing more than guys who have done this for twenty years.

This seminar will be held in Manhattan. The dates I am reserving are as follows:

Saturday, April 5th SOLD OUT!

Sunday, April 6th SOLD OUT!

Saturday, April 12th SOLD OUT!

Sunday, April 13th SOLD OUT!

Saturday, April 19th SOLD OUT!

Sunday, April 20th SOLD OUT!

Saturday, April 26th SOLD OUT!

Sunday, April 27th SOLD OUT!

Why so many dates? In the past I have found that giving a variety of dates works as it allows me to offer as many opportunities to attend as possible. In the end some days are not taken and I simply eliminate those days. Other times I have only one or two people pick a particular day and then see if I can ask them to switch to fill another day that needs one or two. It will probably end up being four to six of the dates above, but I offer you the opportunity to pick the date you would like to attend. If I need to switch things around, I’ll do my best to accommodate you. If we can’t I’ll simply refund the money. If you absolutely must have a particular date due to a flight, etc, let me know this when you order and I’ll move others around to you.

Who should attend? This seminar is for anyone interested in production, or anyone that currently works in any level of production. The language will be kept simple so that beginners or less experienced people can feel comfortable but will be understood by all. Both seasoned shooter/editor and the novice can attend and feel comfortable. If for any reason you attend and find it's not for you, just tell me and I will simply refund the money.

Do I need to bring anything? No, all production equipment from cameras, monitors, scopes, and editing system will be provided. You may ask me if you can bring your camera as one of the test cameras. You can do so after you sign up. Most folks like to bring a pad and pen. Some like to bring an audio recorder.

How long will this seminar last? This will be an all day event. We will start at 9:00 am and go until at least 5:00pm and probably closer to 7:00pm depending on the group's needs.

As of this date, a location has not been officially established. It will be in Manhattan. I like to find a small place and keep the number of attendees to six if possible.

How much will this cost to attend? The cost of this seminar is $100.00. I looked at what all the others charge for one day seminars and I charge at least half of what anyone else with any pedigree charges so it's a good deal. And I include a free DVD on production too. The event is payable via a link below via credit card, or check SECURELY though Pay Pal. You may also pay cash at the door, but this is discouraged, as it gets difficult to keep track of all the logistics of such an event. Contact Walter if you need alternate payment plans.

Space will be limited and this seminars registration can be cut off at any time, so if you are interested, it would be best to register earlier than later. Time and again, I say this and people wait till the last moment only to be shut out. I implore you to sign up early so you don't get shut out. If for some reason you need to cancel after registering, you may do so up to 24 hours before the actual event and all monies will be refunded.
